The redesign of the elita QL100 is also still in progress, but due to some major upgrades, will not be ready until the third quarter this year. To remove any confusion about the availability, we are removing the elita page from the Ionways website.

Last, but not at all least, Ionways will be announcing a new ultra high-end electric ionizer next week. This new model was the result of a collaboration between our manufacturer (Emco Tech) and engineers from a major name brand electronics manufacturer. It will clearly set a new standard for our industry. We already have inventory in our Reno warehouse and are working on finishing up the behind-the-scenes details and marketing.

Non-electric ionizer by Ionways – The Naia and Spartan water filtering

This was transcribed and summarized from a phone conversation with IonWay President Jay Hare and former Technical Service Manager Joe Stumph.  My apologies, this has not been formerly edited or revised. – Brad Hamilton

Cartridge 1 Stage of the Filtration System

          Very Simple – There is a physical 5 micron membrane sediment filter and then it’s packed with centaur carbon which is the Super Hero of the carbon world.  It is absolutely the best stuff you can get your hands on as far as getting the gunk out of your water. And the reason those two are there is to simply protect and maintain the second stage filter which is really the driving motor of this type of system.  To really keep it protected and optimize it’s performance for longer amounts of time.  So the sediment is obvious up to 5 micron.  1 micron is about 1/25,000 of an inch.  So, it’s about 1/5000 of an inch.  The Centaur and the carbon that is in there is going to take care of the volatile organics; chloramines, chlorine, improve taste and odor, and it’s good for many many things.  So it’s pre-treating water so it’s not going to exhaust the second stage filter which is really where the magic of this system takes place. Centaur carbon is the only grade of carbon that can actually absorb the compound of chloramines. It is because it was activated in such a way that it is simply much more porous than traditional types of carbons that it has the ability to increase contact time which is where standard carbon fails is it if you slow it way way down, granulated carbon will get it but it get exhausted very very quickly.  For Centaur carbon, scientists found a catalytic process to where they activate it and it is about 2 ½ times more porous and it’s the pours that create the surface area and that is where it entraps the chloramines.  That is where the contaminates get trapped, in those pours. 

Cartridge 2 Stage of the Water Filtration System

is the guts and blood of this system, this is amazing and really exciting.  It’s a mixed resin bed and it’s this proprietary blend in this process this company has been using.  Every ion in the universe has a polarity, either positive or negative.  It is the same way that an ionizer works is that it physically separates.  Well they have to treat them with different medias.  Well this company has found a way to make these out of the propylene gels that is much more stable so they tend not to fragment and give off other ions back to the water.  Basically it is an exchange, so for every ion you want to remove it has to give one back into the water.  What they have done is found a cationic resin media that as it’s taking those cations in what it’s releasing is good H+ which is hydrogen.  Now the anion on it which is the acidic element is pulling those things in and it is entrapping them and what it gives off is the hydroxide, the OH-.  So as the two are finished with that filter and coming back you’ve got 2 hydrogen, 1 oxygen and you end up with H2O.  It’s is making water that is so absolutely pure it can be used in the most exhausting and demanding industry in the world for clean water which is electronics.  They can use it in pharmaceuticals and making microprocessors.  It truly is amazing. It basically takes everything that’s in there and trades it out for the molecules it needs to make water.  The media used in all the cartridges are FDA approved grade and carries NSF certification.

          What about fluoride? Activated alumina is known to remove fluoride, but not totally.  It will reduce it, but there are some severe limitations to activated alumina and removing fluoride. Activated alumina is the old standard for removing fluoride from water. What it is is aluminum oxide and it will absorb fluoride and it does if fairly well if you are looking at using it in an application it that it is designed to.  In any system that is point of use, in simple truth, the flow rates are much too fast for it to be effective.  You need a flow rate for effective reduction of less than ½ gallon a minute.  For a closer removal of 97% you are best off at .1 gallons per minute using activated alumina. You may be patient, but who is that patient for getting clean water?  If the machine is at 3 liters a minute then maybe 30% removal of fluoride is achieved with activated alumina.  The material is porous, but not very porous and it absorbs water so it expands as it’s doing that which helps to create a bigger surface area.  But in that as the water is running past it, it simply doesn’t have time to leave that deposit inside the aluminum oxide and it passes through fairly easily. 

          So how good of a job will the IonWays purification system do on fluoride?  Amazing.  This is the kind of media that anybody who has been in the water business has been searching for for so long.  It is absolutely amazing.  Fluoride is a monovalent anion, it is an acidic element, so it will instantly be drawn to these resin beads in the second filter. It will instantly be taking care of it.  When we look at fluoride, we know how dangerous it is.  There is so little of it in the water, that this type of system will do an amazing job of riding us all of the fluoride nightmare.

Cartridge 3 Stage of the Water Filtration

 What happens in kind of like reverse osmosis and the filtration is getting rid of anything that we might be concerned about in the water.  That media in cartridge 2 is so strong and does such a good job, that it can’t differentiate in what is good for us and what is bad for us. The media is simply going to take out everything. It is going to leave us with raw water that is perfect for electronic use, but not consumption.  It is devoid of minerals and nutrients which we need that are essential for our health and well being. So now we use the blends of media IonWays has been working on for many years and mastering the water remineralization technology.  We put back in 70 trace minerals which are healthy and beneficial for our bodies which we need replenished every day. 

The water remineralization technology is just going to be limited to the Spartan. The NAIA is going to go a step further and it’s going to be using the newest and most up to date groundbreaking technology coming out of Japan which is ceramic beads.  The Ceramic magnesium technologies that IonWays are using in the NAIA will help us get the redox as well to where it will get rid of the oxidizing principles and depending upon the water, it will get back to a negative ORP without every using electricity.  In addition to the beads, IonWays has gone one step further and also using a proprietary blend of new ORP media that IonWays has been testing for about 6 months now.  At 3 liters a minute, IonWays has seen some great negative ORP levels.  The way the NAIA is setup to achieve the negative is between -200 and -350 ORP at 3 liters a minute flow.  For non-electric ionization works through contact time with the ORP media, the media which drops the ORP, so think about this. You go and get a glass of water from your NAIA, and then the unit sits there for 2 or 3 hours until you come and get another liter of water.  The water in the filter has had a lot of contact time in that remin/orp cartridge, so it has achieved a really good ORP reading. Remember that is just in the first liter. You will see very decent –ORP numbers in the first liter.  Where you really want to watch for in a non-electric ionizer is after it has flowed for a while. So the real question is, where is the ORP after the first gallon?  That is where IonWays has really perfected the right media to do the best job and low ORP and Reminieralization.

What takes place is a simple exchange. The media first attracts and then traps the charged ions and then releases either a hydrogen ion (H+) or a hydroxide (OH-) depending on the polarity of the trapped particle. So once we effectively trade the ions, the remaining H+ and OH- combine, leaving us ultrapure H2O with virtually every other ion removed.

Simply put, the more particles in your water, the more quickly the media will expire – just like any filter or media. Because water quality and personal preference varies, timely replacement of this cartridge is up to the individual.
